Holy Crap -- Updated

Update: Damn. Attytood goes to town on Cornyn. Nice when an investigative journalist can rock out on a blog.

Is the GOP trying to justify violence against judges?

SENATOR JOHN CORNYN: "I don't know if there is a cause-and-effect connection but we have seen some recent episodes of courthouse violence in this country. Certainly nothing new, but we seem to have run through a spate of courthouse violence recently that's been on the news and I wonder whether there may be some connection between the perception in some quarters on some occasions where judges are making political decisions yet are unaccountable to the public, that it builds up and builds up and builds up to the point where some people engage in - engage in violence."

AmericaBlog has a lot more.

We have seen these kinds of statements before--understanding the motives of terrorists and criminals while deploring their methods--all around the world: in Ireland; in the Middle East; and in the U.S. when white supremacists killed civil rights activists and even innocent children, when deluded middle-class college kids bombed laboratories, when environmentalists torched construction sites, and when militias took up arms in open defiance of our system of laws.

I guess my thoughts on this are mixed. I mean, what this guy said is obviously deplorable in many ways. However, I think it is important to consider the motives of people who kill in the name of political ideology. The knee-jerk reaction to September 11th was to simply blow some stuff off. I think going after Osama Bin Laden is obviously justified-- but I worry people aren't interested in even discussing the underlying causes of terrorism. The same is true in Israel and other places around the world.

So, Tommy, I think I agree with what you are saying. Let's not have a total witch hunt the way the right goes after everyone who questions U.S. foriegn policy in response to terrorism. I guess I need to re-read what the Senator said and decide exactly what it all means.

Ben, I think you were right the first time. I think what you are seeing is a campaign to intimidate judges by far-right, virulently pro-life politicians. That is why you have Delay threatening to impeach judges just as you have Santorum huddling with Randall "advocates violence" Terry. They are sending clear, unmistakeable messages to judges. Now, does that mean Cornyn condones violence against them? No, of course not. But when his party is creating that very environment which he speaks of, he has no room to talk, and must be viewd very carefully.

I think it's time that the GOP starts to take Ari Fleischer's advice and watch what it says, watch what what it does.

On second thought, let's let them keep talking.
